in Business Conduct in Saint-Petersburg



On June 18, the Center for Business Ethics and Corporate Governance with the support of US Consulate General in Saint-Petersburg and with participation of Russian Institute of Directors and International Finance Corporation held the conference “Development of Business Through Improving Business Ethics and Corporate Governance”.

The Conference was arranged in the frame of Center for Business Ethics and Corporate Governance’s projects, aimed at improving corporate governance in Russia and implemented with the financial support of Eurasia Foundation and US Agency for International Development (USAID). The goal of the forum was to summarize the results of activities on the project “Training Needs Assessment for Improving Business Ethics and Corporate Governance” and to identify the direction for further improvement of corporate governance and practical implementation of ethical corporate conduct principles within Russian enterprises.

Participants of the conference were 83 representatives from 51 Saint-Petersburg enterprises which took part in the investigation, workshops and trainings, arranged and conducted by the Center with participation of Russian and foreign specialists in the sphere of corporate governance. The participants of the conference were greeted by the US Consul General in Saint-Petersburg Mr. Morris Hughes, who emphasized the significance of the issues to be discussed at the conference for the economic development of both countries.
At a plenary meeting the speakers were Y.Gusev, a specialist in corporate governance, business ethics and business social responsibility, from Russian Institute of Directors, Y. Blagov, the Head of International Management Department at Saint-Petersburg State University, an analyst from the Center for Business Ethics and Corporate Governance U. Bashkina, who presented the Model of companies’ readiness for implementation of best corporate governance practices, developed by the Center. At the end of plenary meeting V. Dashevsky, Corporate Secretary at Irkut Corporation and shared his experience of corporate governance system implementation within the company, and L. Bykova, Deputy General Director on Social Affairs at Severo-Zapadnaya Lesopromishlennaya company (North-Western Wood Enterprise), spoke on company’s achievements in the sphere of social accountability.

In the context of this action there were 4 sections, on which the following issues were considered: effective corporate governance tools, organization of the Board of Directors’ activity, organization of corporate governance within holding companies.

In the section «Tools of effective corporate governance” the speakers were A. Eliseev, representative of International Finance Corporation, A. Vinnik, Director of the Center for Business ethics and Corporate Governance. They gave speeches on such effective corporate governance tools as Annual Account and Corporate Governance Code. S. Perminova, Dean of the Management and Economy Department at Saint-Petersburg Culture and Art University, conducted a game “How to Develop Your Own Code”.
In the section, embracing Board of Directors’ activity, the speakers were V. Korolev, General Director of the North-Western Center of Corporate Governance, Y.A. Shirobokov, National Quality Award Expert, and A.A Filatov, General Director at Independent Directors Association (IDA).
Section dedicated to the corporate governance within holding companies was presented with the participation of T.Halmeev, (Councillor at Institute of Professional Directors) and R.À.Kozlov, General Director of "Corporate governance technologies” Ltd, Moscow).
In the course of the forum there was a field session of corporate secretaries’ business club “Corporate secretary institute in the corporate governance system ”. The participants gave highly positive feedback on the plenary meeting’s speakers as well as on the section activity. The question “Was the conference helpful for you on the whole?” was unanimously answered with “YES”, with the practical benefit assessed at 4.26 points ( on a five-point scale).
