On June, 9, 2005 an International Conference «Corporate governance,
social responsibility and business ethics. The role of business in the
present-day society» took place in St.Petersburg.
The conference was organized by the Center for Business Ethics and Corporate
Governance (CBE) in cooperation with the Russian Institute of Directors
and Independent Directors Association – CBE partners on the project
“Accountability for improving corporate governance”. The project is
a part of the United States Agency on International Development (USAID)
program on corporate governance improving in Russia.
Trends in worldwide corporate governance, social responsibility and
business ethics as well as outlooks of their future development in Russia
were discussed at the conference.
105 representatives of the Russian and foreign companies as well as
noncommercial organizations took part in the conference.
Trends in worldwide corporate governance and social responsibility were
covered in the speeches of: Jeffrey Senne, Head of the Global Compact
Learning Program, Global Office United Nations;
Eric Olson, Vise-President of the “Business for Social Responsibility”
noncommercial organization; Arvid Halvorsen, Vice President on Ñorporate
Social Responsibility of the “Hydro” corporation; Ìatthew Murray, President
of the “Sovereign Ventures Inc.” , Chairman of the Center for Business
Ethics and Corporate Governance.
Final report on the project was presented by S. Kazanskaya, the Project
Director, and U. Bashkina, the Project Analyst.
Sergey Tsybukov, Chairman of the JSC Komsomolskay Pravda Board of Directors
and Svetlana Perminova, dean of the St. Petersburg University of Culture
and Arts faculty of management and economics, have shared their impressions
on the Project activity with the conference participants.
Prospects of the corporate governance development in Russia were told
by Igor Belikov, head of the Russian Institute of Directors and Alexandr
Filatov, Executive Director of the Independent Directors Association.
In closing the Togliatty Community Foundation fundriser Marina Shubina
has shared with the conference participants her unique experience on
creating and developing the Community Fund on the purpose of solving
social problems of the region.
CBE director Alla Vinnik has presented the conference participants "An
Appeal to the business community"(in russian only).
The purpose of the Appeal is to unite representatives of business, government
authorities, noncommercial organizations, mass-media, who support the
CBE activity, aimed at revival of the ethical and human values in Russia.
The Appeal was signed by representatives of 26 organizations. This Appeal
is considered to be a first step to forming a Membership in CBE, designed
to help companies operating in Russia grow and increase profitability
while adopting best practices of business ethics, corporate governance
and social responsibility.
